The Nazi regime defamed non-suitable artists with the term “degenerate art”. Joseph Goebbel’s Reichs Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda confiscated thousands of artworks between 1937 and 1938.
650 of them were shown in the exhibition “Degenerate Art”. Several works were sold abroad, some possibly destroyed. It was only in 1997 that a list appeared in London. On it Goebbel's Ministry had labeled about 16,000 of the artworks and what had happened to them. This list has been publicly availably since 2014 but so far couldn’t be searched.
With the help of church historian Hans Prolingheuer the taz now provides a search function for the list.
